Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

Toi Hangarau | Geospatial Research Institute (GRI) has an opportunity for a Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellow. This role is offered as a full-time, two-year position based in the GRI at the University of Canterbury (UC), with the support of the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre (NTRC), as part of a MethaneSat research project led by the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

This is a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Ngāi Tahu, the principal iwi (tribe) of Te Waipounamu – the South Island of Aotearoa/ New Zealand, to lead the mapping of methane emissions from tribal farming initiatives using a range of data including novel MethaneSat remote sensing imagery and ground-based data. You will be working in Indigenous Māori contexts, consequently a degree of cultural competency, or previous experience working with Indigenous cultures will be highly valued, along with the ability to engage cross-culturally with openness and respect.

You will make use of and develop data analysis methods such as modelling and machine learning. The GRI provides a diverse, inclusive and multidisciplinary research environment, where initiative, eagerness and commitment are highly valued. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of remote sensing and help to develop methods and analysis which may contribute towards reducing methane emissions and mitigating climate change.

Mōu | Who You Are

To be successful in this role you will be a dynamic, innovative and enthusiastic researcher who wants to specialise or gain skills in remote sensing. You will have excellent communication skills and written English, strong quantitative and data analysis skills, the ability to work creatively and independently, and a strong research background.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in geomatics, geospatial science, geography or similar areas or Master’s degree if applying for Research Associate
  • A strong research background in an area relevant to the project
  • Expertise in one or more of remote sensing, geospatial analysis, machine learning and computational modelling
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills
  • A publication track record as well as experience with preparation and delivery of quality oral presentations to a wide range of audiences is essential
  • A proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to a wide variety or groups including scientific and non-scientific audiences
